Great Plains Zoo Hedgehog Predicts Weather

sioux falls, sd

Punxsutawney Phil may get all the attention, but the Great Plains Zoo is home to another type of hog that predicts the weather.

"Reggie," an African Pygmy hedgehog is considered the zoo's resident meteorologist. Zoo officials say Reggie has predicted that spring will begin around March 20.

Reggie isn't exactly going out on a limb, since March 20 is the Vernal Equinox, the official start of spring, anyway.

According to legend, ancient Romans used hedgehogs to predict the weather.

When the tradition came here, hedgehogs were replaced by ground hogs since hedgehogs are not native to North America.

Reggie is one of eight hedgehogs you can see at the zoo.
