Friend Volk: Janklow 'Generous To A Fault'

sioux falls, sd

Former state treasurer David Volk says Bill Janklow's political toughness belied a generous man who would have helped anyone in need.

Janklow, who served four terms as governor of South Dakota, died Thursday. He was 72. Janklow announced in November that he was dying of brain cancer.

Volk said most people have a mistaken impression of the flamboyant politician as a bully when in fact he was a strong leader.

He says, "His persona was always just kind of hard-nosed, a tough negotiator. That's what leaders do."
Volk last visited with Janklow on Tuesday.  Volk says he and Janklow became friends in 1974. Volk was state treasurer and Janklow Attorney General.

They bonded over politics and their love for the Chicago Bears.
