A portion of the iron railing that once ran the length of the upper deck of the Meridian Bridge over the Missouri River now has a different function.
The railing can now be seen along the 200-foot boardwalk on the north side of Yankton's Gurney's Landing building along Second Street.
D.B. Gurney was one of the primary boosters for the Meridian Bridge and served as president of the Meridian Highway Bridge Company as Yankton-area residents sought to build the link over the Missouri River.
The railing was removed from the bridge in 1977 when work was done on the structure and concrete barriers were placed on the top deck.
Most of the railing was scrapped, but a portion of it was sold.
