Thanks to holiday food drives, shelves at the Sioux Falls Food Pantry are filled with perishable items
. The Pantry is sitting pretty well, but they still could use your help.
"The holidays happen in South Dakota during the winter time, and the cold weather always puts a strain on family budgets," Executive Director of Feeding South Dakota Matt Gassen said.
While turkeys are a popular choice for Thanksgiving meals, hams are the perfect choice for many families at Christmas, which is why the pantry could use some more before the weekend.
"People that would want to donate hams at any of our locations they'd be welcomed cause we can surely distribute them right away out to families," Gassen said.
And although the need is great during the holidays here at the food pantry, donations are always welcomed and needed throughout the remainder of the year.
"The thing about hunger is, hunger is with us each and every day, 365 days a year. It knows no season; it knows no holidays," Gassen said.
And with all the support lately, the food pantry has been able to meet the needs of those in need with the community's quick response.
"At Thanksgiving, we didn't have any turkeys and we asked the community to support us and within a week, we had 2,250 turkeys donated and money to buy more and now we're able to use some of that money to buy hams," Gassen said.
So with the community's help, once again everyone can enjoy a warm holiday meal this weekend.
