Flag Given To SD Schools Of Mines And Technology

rapid city, sd

The South Dakota Schools of Mines and Technology is now home to a 45-star American flag from the late 1800s.

The flag, which dates back to 1895/1896, was given to the school on Friday by Jill and Tom Fontaine.

The flag measures 23.5 feet by 12 feet and it’s history is unknown.  Due to the size, historians believe it could have flown over a fort between 1895 and 1896.

Jill Fontaine was given the flag by her father in 2008.  He had received it as a gift from a neighbor in 1967.

Jill Fontaine works at the School of Mines in the cashier’s office. Her husband, Dr. Tom Fontaine is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
