Fatal Bike Crash Investigation Continues

Sioux Falls, SD

A 22-year-old woman riding her bike was killed after she was hit by a car leaving a parking lot along 49th Street in Sioux Falls.

"A bicyclist on the sidewalk traveling east. A car pulling out of the parking lot preparing to turn right and go west, did not see the bicyclist and struck the bicyclist," Lieutenant Troy Lubbers said.

Officers immediately re-routed traffic to clear out the intersection once they arrived on scene. They also did everything they could to try and save the victim who was on the bike.

"We had a physician on scene a short time after the collision occurred, went to provide emergency medical treatment but there was nothing that could be done," Lubbers said.

Lubbers said that officers have remained very busy over the past week and a half responding to calls just like this.

"It's a real unfortunate deal. This is our fifth severe crash that's happened in the past week and a half. Very tragic set of circumstances," Lubbers said.

The stretch of road along 49th Street was shut down for three hours as officers continued their investigation.

Lubbers says the other severe crashes have involved excessive speed or alcohol, but he adds knowing exactly what happened here will take some time.

"Today, it's really early in the investigation phase yet to speculate what might have happened or what might be the reason. We'll have to dig a little bit deeper to find out what really happened," Lubbers said.

The driver of the car is a 26-year-old woman, also from Sioux Falls, and Lubbers says she has been extremely cooperative with officers in their investigation.
