Family & Friends Proud Of Young Aberdeen Pilot

Aberdeen, SD

Aberdeen native Matt Guthmiller landed in the history books Monday.  At just 19 years old, he is the youngest person to fly solo around the world. The Guthmiller family sent information to Guinness World Records Tuesday.

Guthmiller landed Monday night near San Diego. His trip lasted about a month and a half.

He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School a year ago. Those at the school still remember Guthmiller well.

Aberdeen teacher Terra McQuillen wasn't surprised to see her former student set out on the journey. She was even less surprised he completed it.

"Matt's one of those guys that when he has a goal, he will make it happen," McQuillen said.

Guthmiller's dad agrees. Allen Guthmiller says a good plane and plan kept him from worrying when his son was in the air. He says Matt didn't face any major problems during the journey.

"I talked to him at least twice a day I think every day. I talked to him I think three or four times yesterday when he was over the Pacific," Allen said.

Allen also tracked his son's progress and followed pictures of his experience on Facebook. He says Matt liked Greece and the royal treatment he received in the city of Manila.

McQuillen also followed the trip.

"It's been really neat to imagine him in all the different places and flying over places that we learned in class," McQuillen said.

Allen says it's been fun to see pictures of his son doing things he's always wanted to do himself, including climbing a pyramid in Egypt. That said, Allen is eager for his son’s return to South Dakota.

"I'm glad he's back. I'm proud of him. I knew he would do it and I'm looking forward to seeing him," Allen said.

Allen says his son still has a couple stops to make before returning home, but he expects him back here in Aberdeen within a week or so.
