Sioux Falls, SD
Thanks to Bimbo Bakeries in Sioux Falls, Faith Temple Church helped the hungry today by handing out 7,000 pounds of bread, bagels and sweets. The Food Giveaway has become a staple of the church as it fulfills it's mission to help those in need.
A truckload of bread is a sweet sight for many in search of a break. Barb Leiferman is picking up a few bags for her daughter who recently broke her leg.
"It's really nice to be able to do that and have this available for the community because a lot of people right now are struggling. I know that I haven't worked since January and she's going to be out for five weeks. It will benefit both of us," Leiferman said.
7,000 pounds is quite the donation from Bimbo Bakeries. Pastor Jeff Hayes says for families, the money saved adds up quick.
"One lady told me one day, she said she came and got a box of bread and she went home and looked it over and she said she had about $60 worth of bread in just that one box," Pastor Hayes said.
Thursday's event isn't just a one day thing. Faith Temple has been hosting the giveaway for years and they've handed out more than five million pounds of food. Another giveaway is scheduled for Friday at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds where even more food will be picked up by those who need it.
"Oh my gosh, it's amazing. I thought it would just be white bread but there's raisin bread and wheat bread and all different types. It's great for everybody because some people can't have or prefer not to have certain kinds," Leiferman said.
The Food Giveaway this Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
