Event Details Income Needs Of SD Elderly

sioux falls, sd

A national organization hopes a new tool that measures the income older U.S. adults required to live independently and cover basic living expenses across the country will help inform the public and influence public policy.

Wider Opportunities for Women, based in Washington, D.C., presented its research that includes data on elderly in South Dakota's 66 counties on Wednesday at the Main Library in Sioux Falls.

The advocacy group says even older adults who annually receive more than $10,890, which is the federal poverty line, still can't meet their basic needs.

The information comes from its "Elder Economic Security Standard" Index, developed with the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. The index ranks states and Washington, D.C. according to each one's shortfalls between income and necessary expenses.
