It is a somber night at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
Inmate Eric Robert is scheduled to be executed at 10 p.m. for his role in the death of a correctional officer during an escape attempt in 2011. Ronald 'RJ' Johnson died when Robert and another inmate tried to break out of prison.
Officials say Monday night’s execution will be professional, dignified and humane.
It is very likely that just 9:40 p.m., Robert was taken from his holding cell into the death chamber and strapped to a table.
Based on a past execution record that outlined this process, IV's were in Robert's arms before 10 p.m.
This whole thing, from start to finish, could take just ten minutes.
You can do a lethal injection in a few different ways, including using mixtures of three or two different drugs. But on Monday they are injecting Robert with one drug.
Witnesses are in the viewing room, including members of Johnson's family. Robert's lawyer says no family members or friends showed up on his behalf.
Robert has spent this weekend preparing for Monday. He had his last meal on Saturday, which was moose tracks-flavored ice cream. For religious reasons he has been fasting since.
Once the execution is over, officials will brief the media on what happened.
