Duck, Duck, Paint

Sioux Falls, SD

Visitors to the Great Plains Zoo got a unique show Wednesday. Petrie the duck made her debut as an artist! We were there as she created a masterpiece, for a good cause.

Petrie is no ordinary duck. Not only is she a traveling ambassador for the Great Plains Zoo, she's also a budding artist.

"Today, Petrie was having her maiden voyage as a painter," Great Plains Zoo President and CEO Elizabeth Whealy said.

With a little help from zoo handlers, Petrie got paint on her webbed feet and went to work on the canvass.

If you're a fan of her work, you could have one to hanging in your home. Petrie's paintings will be up for auction at the zoo's annual Jungle Jubilee this August.

"Usually we have about 400 people right out here on our lawn at the zoo. They come for great dinner, great auctions. This year we have East of Westerville, a really fun band. And mainly to show their support for our zoo. These are the people that help building our community zoo," Whealy said.

While Petrie's art is one-of-a-kind, it isn't the only animal-inspired artwork that will be up for bid this year.

"There are also packages where you actually can join the animals in painting the canvasses, as with our penguins," Whealy said.

Zoo officials hope the whole community will come out to hang with animals like Petrie, and bid on the various, unique items on the auction block this year.

"I think Petrie is an impressionist. I think it was a very interesting painting and it's going to find a loving home with one of our supporters I'm sure," Whealy said.

All of the materials used to paint today are animal friendly.

If you want one of Petrie's paintings, you can bid for it at the Jungle Jubilee on August 7.
