Double Duty Under The Friday Night Lights

brookings, sd

Fall brings football, especially on Friday nights.

For just a few hours, sometimes for just a moment or two, teams from neighboring towns are enemies on this field. Both are prepared and both here to win. But don't forget about the other team here tonight. The marching band brings its ‘A’ game as well.

“This is the season we have the most work. It's definitely the most stressful,” drum major Jackie Meyer said.

Meyer's job is to keep 104 band members in line

“We still have those kids that aren't in step, so it's a work in progress. It's never something you ever perfect,” Meyer said.

And besides practice, dedication is also needed. And this show band has two Bobcats pulling a double on Friday nights.

“I've done baseball and band at the same time and football,” Conor Lanning said.

“It's hard to do one sport. Two is probably difficult too, but you have to have good time-management and good passion for both of them,” Luke Stratmoen said.

And do double duty in cleats.

“As a freshman last year I marched in uniform and it's two completely different monsters, marching in your football uniform,” Lanning said.

“They whip their helmets off, do half-time, and put their helmets back on,” Meyer said.

“They really are dedicated, to just come from the football game, which they might not be feeling if they're not winning,” Matt Olson said.

Sure winning is good. But moments are too; especially in high school which everyone knows goes by so fast.

“Honestly, yeah, the football team gives us a hard time. You just have to let it go over you because the hard work and the friendships are what you remember from high school,” Stratmoen said.

“When you're out there practicing and it's too cold, you live for those moments, like when you're up on the podium or out in the field,” Meyer said.

No matter if you were in the band, on the field or both.
