DCI Leads Investigation Into Mitchell Baby Death

Mitchell, SD

The death of a three-month-old baby in Mitchell is under investigation and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the case.

Brooklyn Howard died Tuesday after police were called to a day care just south of the city limits.

Authorities say an autopsy on the three month old has been completed and South Dakota DCI agents are now heading up the investigation, but as far as what exactly happened, investigators say the case is still wide open.

It was around 3:30 p.m. in the afternoon on Tuesday when police and paramedics were called to the home day care for a ‘death/coroner’s call.’

The Mitchell Police log says officers and medics responded to the call at a home in the 700 block of West Spruce Street.

The only home in the 700 block of West Spruce Street is a home that says it has day care openings. KELOLAND News knocked on the door and nobody answered, but there is a hand-written note that says there was no day care Thursday.

The day care provider did not return phone calls from KELOLAND News either.

Davison County Chief Deputy Steve Brink says he can't share the autopsy results at this point but the sheriff's office, DCI, and Mitchell Police are looking into all aspects of the baby's death.

Authorities hope to have more information on the case Friday.

The Davison County State's Attorney is out of the office all week at a convention, but one of the deputy state's attorneys says they are aware of the ongoing investigation.

The funeral for the three month old is planned for Saturday.
