Dakotas Tribe Gets New Prosecutor

fargo, nd

A reservation that straddles the Dakotas' border is getting a boost in law enforcement thanks to the federal government.

Standing Rock is one of four reservations in the United States that has been awarded grant money from the U.S. Department of Justice to hire a special federal prosecutor for cases involving violence against women

The contract was approved earlier this week by the Standing Rock tribal council and gives the tribe $450,000 over three years for salary, travel, training and expenses.

Reservation Chief Judge Bill Zuger says it's an innovative way to tackle cases while Congress is stalled on a law that would help prosecute domestic violence cases.

The new assistant U.S. attorney will be able to pursue domestic violence cases in both federal and tribal courts.
