Corsica Storm Surprises Residents

Corsica, SD

High winds and baseball-size hail hit parts of south-central South Dakota today. The damage is extensive and the residents didn't even see the storm coming.

"Out of nowhere. All of the sudden there it was," Lavonne DeBoer said.

It was a storm that the residents of Corsica didn't expect, and they won't forget.

"It was pretty bad. It was really coming down," Scott Berends said.

Many homeowners say the wind was the worst part of the storm, but not Scott Berends. He still has welts on his back after being hit by hail while walking the short distance to check on his mom during the storm.

"It felt like I was being punched. I lost my breath by the time I just from my apartment to my mom's apartment two doors down," Berends said.

The cleanup is now underway. The Corsica Volunteer Fire Department works hard cleaning up the branches that fell in a city park. Anywhere you look in the community, there are fallen trees, including this one that landed on top of a car. Witnesses say there was a man inside the car when the tree feel, but he was able to get out and wasn't hurt.

The wind destroyed not just trees, but buildings. This baseball field is now a tangled mess after the roof was blown off, most of it landing in trees hundreds of feet away from the diamond. A church is also dealing with roof damage from the storm.

Lavonne DeBoer is usually happy with the big trees in her yard, but not today.

"I have three big trees in the backyard and they were all very twisted and broken, so I have a big task ahead of me," Lavonne DeBoer

Today, she lost many branches and some even damaged the gutter and the roof of her home. With the help of her neighbors, a lot of the cleanup is done, but the piles are still in her yard.

Whether it's the Hoffman Gas and Grill dealing with broken windows from hail, or a homeowner picking up fallen branches after strong winds, it will take some time to clean up from the storm that took Corsica by surprise.
