Communities Celebrate National Night Out

Sioux Falls, SD

Neighborhoods all over the country, including Sioux Falls, are celebrating National Night Out.

It's designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, along with generating support for and participation in local anti-crime programs.

It will also strengthen neighbor connections, police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are watching for them.

"The real purpose about this was because back in 1980, our society became more of a 24 hours society.  In such, a lot of the neighbors -- some are working, some work afternoons.  So, we never made contact.  This was good for the bad guys, simply because they weren't being noticed," Sioux Falls Police Officer Jim Larson said.

Nationally, 37 million people participate in National Night out.
