Cleaning Up Palisades State Park

Garretson, SD

Despite the rainy start to the weekend, dozens of ambitous outdoors men and women came out to take part in the fourth annual Adopt a Crag event at Palisades State Park.

"And everybody wants to know what is a Crag, and a Crag is a climbing area," Augustana College Outdoor Program Coordinator Mark Greeno said.

While it may be the fourth annual event, it's the third year Augustana College has organized it, doing everything from picking up trash to laying down fresh wood chips on the park's trails.

"We have a lot of people that came out to do some stewardship with the Game Fish and Parks for the state of South Dakota," Greeno said.

Considering everything there is to do at Palisades State Park, from camping to rock climbing to having a picnic, these people volunteering today say it's the least they can do to pay back.

"This is just our way to give back to the Palisades, we come out here and go climbing and we go hiking, it's just a great place we can escape and get out of campus for awhile, so we do what we can to give back," Volunteer Karise Stillson said.

It's not just Augustana students pitching in. Outdoor enthusiasts from the University of South Dakota came out to volunteer as well.

"It's awesome, we have 47 people here today, almost 50, it's awesome to see everyone working together, even though there may be some rivalry between state schools and Augustana, we can all work together today and do something great," Stillson said.

And each lending hand, will make this park clean and accessible for years to come.
