Church Donates 10,000 Water Bottles To Red Cross

Sioux Falls, SD

The Red Cross has been helping storm victims in the last week by handing out about 37,000 meals, hundreds of comfort kits and bottles of water.

A local church has already been collecting water this month and decided to give the surplus they've received to the victims of last week's storms.

Embrace Church in Sioux Falls has a large congregation of about 1,800 people. Each month they work together on a project called "One Thing," to help any needs they see in the community. June has been all about collecting water, with a goal of 10,000 bottles.

"Right now it looks like we're right around 19,000. So we've way over shot the goal," Matt Morrison, Care Pastor at Embrace Church, said.

Originally, the church planned to donate the bottles to the food pantries in Sioux Falls and Tea, as well as the Union Gospel Mission and The Banquet. Because they've done so well, they're actually able to give to more organizations than they had planned.

"We over-shot that goal at a time when there was the peak of the flooding in northwest Iowa, Wessington Springs had happened. And we just recognized there was a great opportunity to reach a little broader and do something more regional with it," Morrison said.

About 10,000 bottles of water have been donated to the Red Cross to be handed out to the many storm victims and recovery crews across the area.

Being able to find projects the church is passionate about is why Morrison says they are so successful.

"The fact that we met our goal is not a surprise at all. The fact that we're at nearly double, still with one Sunday to go is a lot more surprising. And the nice thing is we're not done yet," Morrison said.

The Red Cross is looking for donations to help the storm victims.

You can also make water donations to the Embrace Church at the Tea or Sioux Falls locations.
