Chase, False Hijack Report Under Investigation

rapid city, sd

Two police departments, the Pennington County Sheriff's Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol are investigating an unusual chain of events including a high-speed chase and false report of a hijacked plane.

It all started at 8:13 p.m. Thursday, when a Box Elder Police officer attempted to stop a Volkswagen Jetta with a broken tail light.  But the car didn't stop.

Authorities say the driver turned onto Radar Hill Road and took off at speeds up to 100 miles per hour.  Because of those speeds, they called off the search.

A little later, authorities discovered the Jetta abandoned on Raveen Street in Rapid Valley.  At that point, Highway Patrol troopers and the Pennington County Sheriff's office got involved.

At 1:25 a.m. Friday, a trooper found the man who owned the vehicle in question walking down Highway 44.  Authorities say Donald Belile admitted to being involved in the pursuit.  Around that same time, police got a call about a hijacked plane at the Rapid City Airport.  That report turned out to be false.

Police believe the cases are linked, but at this point, they haven't released any more details.
