Chapel Valley Neighborhood Gets National Recognition

rapid city, sd

A Rapid City neighborhood is nationally recognized for reducing its wildfire risk.

The Chapel Valley neighborhood was recognized by National Firewise Community Program.  The community cleared brush and dry fuels from around homes and thinned an overgrown forest.

"There was so much underbrush, so much dead wood, so much tangle in it that if a fire started, we were going to lose those homes.  So this was our greatest concern, to make it fire safe for our residents," Chapel Valley community member George Larson said.

"You know, what Chapel Valley has done is they've taken their part in realizing that it's everybody's fight.  They can't just rely on the fire department alone to help them," Lt. Tim Weaver with the Rapid City Fire Department said.

It cost around $6,500 to do all the work.  People living in the neighborhood will be reimbursed.

Chapel Valley is only the fifth Firewise Community in the state and the first in Rapid City.
