CFB: USD Spring Football

Sioux Falls, SD

After a disappointing 1 and 10 record a year ago, the South Dakota football team is ready to turn the page under the direction of second year head coach Joe Glenn. This weekend the Yotes made a trip to Sioux Falls for spring ball.

"My old adage is, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time, you just keep getting better a little bit at a time," said Head Coach Joe Glenn.

And that is exactly what Joe Glenn wanted his team to do as they took their talents to Bob Young Field this weekend. Glenn is entering his second year with the team and getting a feel for what he has and what he needs to get. To him there is no better place to evaluate those things than spring football.

"You've got to install. You get your offense installed, your defense installed, and your special teams. Then you go out and practice football! Play a little football, tackle, fundamentals. It's time to coach. You coach your defense and your offense, you don’t have a game on Saturday against anyone else. You really have a chance to do the fundamentals of coaching football," said Joe Glenn.

For USD practicing outside was a bit of a change from the Dakota Dome they're use to playing in. But it was the red and black's defense that shined in the elements.

"We're fighting the elements here today a little bit. The winds whipping, the balls wet, and the defense is having their way with the offense. But we're getting better," said Glenn.

USD has a few notable games on this years schedule such as week two they will travel to take on the Jayhawks. For coach Glenn he is excited to have his former team Montana in Vermillion as well as a November 16th match up in the Dome with in state rival SDSU. So which game is he most excited about?

"The first game, we open up with Cal Davis at home. We have six home games this year so that should help us, we look forward to playing in the dome, said Glenn.

That game against Cal Davis will be in Vermillion on August 31st.
