Brookings Robbery Suspect Arrested After Crash

Brookings, SD

A robbery suspect is in custody in Brookings County following a crash on the South Dakota State University campus.

A Brookings County resident found a vehicle backed up to his residence around 5 p.m. on Friday. The driver aimed a handgun at the homeowner when confronted and took off. Authorities say the license plate number matched that of a vehicle stolen on Thursday, August 21, from the 1700 block of 8th Street in Brookings.

Authorities found the vehicle later on Friday when it crashed into a tree near 16th Avenue and 7th Street on the South Dakota State University campus. The driver took off to the south on Faculty Drive.

From witness descriptions, along with other information, the suspect was identified as Michael Ramon. Deputies and investigators found the 20-year-old at a friend's house in Volga.

Ramon is charged with first-degree robbery, intentional damage to property, first-degree burglary, aggravated assault, grand theft, possession of a firearm while in commission of a felony, and ingesting a toxic substance. He is being held at the Brookings County Detention Center on a $50,000 cash bond.

A subsequent search of Ramon's residence provided Brookings Police with additional stolen property. Items included firearms, a TV, a large quantity of loose change, and some other items. Police believe Ramon had unloaded the stolen property from the vehicle before crashing into a tree. Brookings Police also recovered the revolver used in the robbery incident. The firearm was also reported stolen on Thursday, August 21.
