Bill Janklow Receiving Hospice Care

Pierre, sd

Former South Dakota Governor and Congressman Bill Janklow has been moved to hospice care.

Current South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard made the announcement just before he started his State of the State address. Daugaard says Janklow's son, Russ, passed along the information on his father.

At the beginning of November 2011, Bill Janklow announced he had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. At the time, Janklow said the cancer covered his entire brain. He was being treated by doctors at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

Janklow was first elected as the Governor of South Dakota in 1978. He was re-elected in 1982 to that position. He was term limited out of office in 1986 and returned to work as a lawyer in private practice. He re-entered the political ring in 1994 when he was elected governor again. He was re-elected in 1998 and is the only person in state history to serve 16 years as governor.

In 2003, Janklow was elected to be South Dakota's lone Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives. He held that position until 2003, when he was involved in a deadly crash.

Daugaard didn't say where Janklow is receiving hospice care.
