Berget Sentencing To Begin Monday

Sioux Falls, SD

The pre-sentencing hearing for a South Dakota inmate who pleaded guilty to killing a correctional officer is scheduled to begin Monday morning.

Forty-nine-year-old Rodney Berget has asked for a judge, not a jury, decide whether he should spend life in prison or be put to death for killing Ron Johnson during a failed prison escape attempt last year.

A judge has already sentenced fellow inmate, Eric Robert, to death. A third inmate, Michael Nordman, has pleaded not guilty. He's suspected of supplying the murder weapons. Prosecutors have not released whether they will seek the death penalty against Nordman.

KELOLAND News will be at the hearing which is expected to last several days. Listen to the hearing live on the KELOLAND.com Live Coverage Page when it begins.
