Bar Takes Financial Hit After Burglary

Madison, SD

A bar in Madison, South Dakota is trying to overcome a financial hit when burglars struck the business last week.

In total, 5 Video Lottery Machines and the ATM were hit during the burglary. Even though the money from those machines are now missing, Owner Jeff Gates says he still owes money to multiple businesses.

Gates says the burglars used a crowbar to pry open the front door. The owner says he's glad no one was hurt during the break-in, and the money can be replaced, but it will be difficult for the bar to recoup its losses. He's planning on adding extra security, but he knows that only does so much against burglars that he says knew what they were doing.

“These people that want in the building are coming in. You're not going to stop them. You can tell by the way they operated, they were in and out of here so quick, they knew exactly what they wanted, where to get it and how to get out fast,” Gates said.

Even after the break-in, Gates says he loves the Madison community and his loyal collection of customers.
