The Sheriff's office sent out a message on social media, asking for help locating a stolen ATV in Baltic. We talked with the family, who is asking for help finding their son's quad.
For 11-year-old Landen France, heading to the dirt track has become a weekend activity his whole family enjoys.
"How it's fun. I don't really care about winning or losing. I just like to race," said France.
Unfortunately, the quad he just got last year is gone. Someone broke into the family's garage and stole the four-wheeler this week.
"I was mad. I was angry. I was sad. It was almost like you were mourning. It was almost like a violation," said Landen's mom, Ashley Richards, "I mean they stole from an 11-year-old boy."
Ashley Richards, Landen's mom, says they locked the garage, but now may have to spend up to $10,000 for a new quad. Richards moved to the quiet town of Baltic to get away from rising crime in Sioux Falls. Now, because of this and other recent thefts in the area, she says they're rethinking how they live their lives.
"We sit with our garage doors open while our kids play outside. Maybe don't have your garage door open so people can see what's inside," said Richards.
"Lock up the garage and if you're in a small town, don't think that you're safe from people who steal," said France.
We also received messages from viewers, in the same area, saying they had dirt bikes stolen. The Sheriff's office says they are still investigating these thefts, and are not sure if they're connected or not.
They say you should lock up your belongings, keep track of serial and VIN numbers, and make sure neighbors look out for each other.
Officials have seen an increase in similar crimes in Baltic, Crooks and Renner.
