Baltic Bridge Worse Than Crumbling

BALTIC, SD

Minnehaha County Commissioners say a county bridge is a mess and isn't safe to drive on.

Tuesday, the county commission decided to officially close the bridge over Highway 114, or the Baltic Bridge, for good.

Rebuilding it could cost about $2.5 million.  Officials say the structure isn't just crumbling.

"We have portions of the deck starting to collapse.  It has sagged two to three inches between the beams.  The concrete has deteriorated to the point that structurally, it's not enough," Assistant Highway Superintendent Tom Wilsey said.

People driving over the bridge will be detoured, increasing the traffic on 5th Street.  But that comes with some challenges as well.

We'll tell you what needs to be done to that road tonight on KELOLAND News.
