Back-To-School Shopping Stresses Family Budgets

Sioux Falls, SD

With the start of the academic year just around the corner, parents and children are starting to cross off items on the back to school list.

The start of a new school year is an expensive time for most families. To help cut on costs, Ted Braaten utilizes the sales at stores, tries to use leftover supplies from last year, and shops early.

"The sales help out with most families, to be able to clothe them, and like I say get supplies and stuff too," parent Ted Braaten said.

And even though he can't place an exact price tag on back to school shopping, Braaten says the supplies are the least of his costs.

"This part is probably the cheapest part, you get to the clothes and stuff like that, and that's when you end up getting a lot more expensive," Braaten said.

The start of classes can bring some added stress to a lot of parent's wallets, but Braaten's son, Brady, is ready to get back to school, and one of his favorite things: recess.

"You get to play tag and play basketball or play soccer with your friends," student Brady Braaten said.

But not everyone is shopping for their own kids. Debi Juhl is purchasing items for her church's fundraiser to give to families in need.

"this time of year is hard because you've gone through the summer, and all of a sudden you have to buy a lot of supplies, and as they get older it gets even more expensive," Debi Juhl said.

Which is what so many programs are trying to help with as parents prepare their children for the new school year.

For families struggling to get everything on the back to school list, the Banquet is hosting Project S.O.S. On Saturday, August 16th at Whittier Middle School in Sioux Falls from 9a.m. to 4p.m. To find out how you can help, visit the Banquet's website.
