Authorities Search For Missing Inmate

Rapid City, SD

Authorities need your help to find a missing South Dakota prison inmate.

The Department of Corrections is looking for 25-year-old Derek Bissonette.

On Sunday, Bissonette walked away from the Rapid City Minimum Unit.

Bissonette is a Native American male, 5-feet-9 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds.

He’s currently serving a four-year sentence for attempted grand theft out of Pennington County.

The unit's manager says Bissonette went missing between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday. He says the unit has almost 100 inmates.

The unit isn't locked and inmates can leave, although there are penalties for doing so without permission.

If you see Bissonette or know anything about his whereabouts, you are encouraged to contact law enforcement.
