After investigation of the fire scene, and talking with witnesses, police say the fire started on the east facing porch of the home. That's where authorities found a 20 gallon metal trashcan holding ash and hot coals from the indoor wood burning fireplace. Cigarette butts were also disposed of in this area by people in a separate living space. There were no electrical wiring or appliances located in this area.
The ignition source of the fire could not be accurately determined because there was two separate places where the fire could have started. The five children died from smoke inhalation in the early morning hours of April 1st.
