Authorities are investigating a deadly plane crash Friday evening near the Sioux Falls Airport.
The plane had just taken off and didn’t make it very far before it crashed straight into the ground, a few blocks west of the airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration says all four people in the plane died in the crash. The small plane took off from the Sioux Falls Airport at 2:24 Friday afternoon. It was expected to land in Rapid city just after 3:00 p.m.
At this hour the FFA is investigating. An area of about 1,000 feet is currently roped off.
The plane had just taken off, knew it had a problem, tried to get back to the airport and then crashed. Investigators are still unsure why it crashed.
“There was unknown problems. There was one person who said there was smoke from the plane when they were making there way back to the airport, but that is all we know right now. FAA has been notified. The scene has been secured. The necessary requirements are being done now for the investigation,” Fire Chief Jim Sideras said.
”But it’s an incredibly sad thing. There are certainly four families that are impacted here in a very sad way," Mayor Mike Huether said.
Authorities could not remember the last time there was a serious crash like this at the Sioux Falls Airport.
