A former Rapid City man accused of putting drugs in his girlfriend's beverages in an attempt to kill her unborn baby has been charged for a second time.
Alfredo Vargas was charged a year ago with attempted murder, but the case was dismissed after this attorney challenged the prosecution's expert witness.
Prosecutors claim that the 35-year-old Vargas put an herb called Blue Cohosh into one of his girlfriend's drinks. The herb is commonly used as part of a tea to induce labor.
Authorities say the woman delivered a healthy baby.
Pennington County Deputy State's Attorney Scott Roetzel says he has a new expert who is medical doctor and is prepared to testify in the case.
