Alert Cancelled In Rock Rapids, IA

rock rapids, ia

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office has cancelled an alert on a possible abduction.

The Lyon county sheriff's office took a phone call around 7 p.m. from a bystander who heard a 15 year-old girl scream before being slammed into a late-model Pontiac Grand Prix. Officers quickly hit the pavement.

“We came to a house that said, I saw that Grand Prix, but it think it was some local kids,” Lyon County Sheriff Blythe Bloemendaal said.

For more than an hour, more than a dozen officers swarmed a one-block stretch of North Second Avenue in Rock Rapids. Bloemendaal said officers found the car and the teens in question. They brought them back to the scene and the witness who initially made the call identified both the vehicle and the teenage girl.

There have been two separate attempted abduction reports in the area recently, and Sheriff Bloemendaal says that has heightened people's awareness of potentially dangerous situations.

“We would have taken it the same way regardless. However the fact is, yes we've had some attempted abductions in the area. We've got a white van and black convertible attempting to talk to people, coax them into his car, even going as far as grabbing a hold and trying to get them into his car. So it's extremely serious and we're taking them all serious,” he said.
