Akron Community Reacts To Couple's Death

Akron, IA

The death of the Neunabers has left the Akron community stunned.

The Neunabers were known around the Akron community as a quiet, hardworking couple. After hearing the news that their deaths were suspicious, one resident says she doesn't know why someone would hurt them.

"I was just kind of sick about it all," Edie Small said.

As crews continue to search the home of Donald and Esther Neunaber, Small is still trying to wrap her head around the fact that the long-time farmers near Akron are gone.

"That was just so disheartening to hear that news," Small said.

Small knew the Neunabers for years. She says they were good Christian people that always made time for others. She also knew their son, Jonathan, who was named as a person of interest in the case. Almost every day she says, she would meet him at the town library and talk about weather and politics.

According to the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department, agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will be traveling to Wisconsin to continue their investigation. The Sheriff's Department is also working on bringing Neunaber backed to Iowa.

Small says the last few days are something she never thought she would see in Akron.

"It was just disheartening news. Just didn't want to hear something like that because it's pretty peaceful around here and nothing much like that happens ever here," Small said.

Small says she and the rest of the Akron community will continue to have every member of the Neunaber's family in their thoughts and prayers.

"Hope that Don and Esther are in a better place and that we can find forgiveness for anybody who did anything bad to them," Small said.

Jonathan Neunaber is the head of the Plymouth County Democratic Party.

We did a background check on him, and he doesn't seem to have a criminal past, besides a speeding ticket earlier this year.
