A Local Hy-Vee Celebrates The Tastes Of South Dakota

Local Hy-Vee stores are focusing their attention on spring right now, with their annual "Spring Time Party" promotion. One Sioux Falls store is taking the theme and putting a local twist on it.

The theme of this year's Spring Time Party is "A Taste of Hy-Vee".  A local store is using the promotion as a chance to show-off what South Dakota has to offer the palate.

"We wanted to kind of take it to the next level. So as the 57th and Cliff store, we did a Taste of Hy-Vee, South Dakota style. So we really focused on some of the unique products and vendors we had come in that made things here in South Dakota," Hy-Vee Food Safety Manager Melanie Hammer said.

Each day, they'll showcase some South Dakota food in the store and give a short presentation about it. But that's not all they'll be doing to shed some light on the state.

They'll also be putting out bins for customers to make non-perishable food donations to Feeding South Dakota.

It is a group that Hy-Vee's in the area are very familiar with.

"On a daily basis, they stop in our stores and we do give them items that have been slightly damaged that we aren't able to sell. Or some of our bread and things like that," Hammer said.

"It's very important. Anybody who's involved in that realizes that the food pantries suffer sometimes from a lack of quality things to provide for people who are really in need," shopper Bob Neely said.

Neely is a former teacher in the area and says the need for food is very real. He says he's thrilled to see the store donating to such a worthy cause.

"In the public schools, you see it in the children who come to school without adequate nourishment in the morning and that kind of thing," Neely said.

The bins for Feeding South Dakota will be available for donations until Sunday.

Some local food companies, like "Dakota Style" chips, will also be making donations for each item sold to other charities.
