Sioux Falls, SD
A Sioux Falls woman at the center of one of our most popular KELOLAND News investigations
was back in court today.
As part of a plea bargain, Jennifer Zimmer avoided prison time and was sentenced to 60 days in jail on one count of insurance fraud, but that's not what a lot of our viewers will remember her for.
Zimmer and her husband George have been in and out of the news
lately for legal troubles. They were the center of a KELOLAND News investigation involving trashed rental properties.
Just last week, KELOLAND News showed you the beginning of an investigation we've been working on for the last month. George and Jennifer Zimmer and their seven children were Andy Gibson's tenants on South Euclid Avenue in Sioux Falls.
We've shown you the disgusting pictures of the rental homes that landlords accuse the Zimmers of damaging.
In the past, we've tried asking her questions about that.
Tuesday, Zimmer was a lot quieter as she walked into court to be sentence on one count of insurance fraud stemming from a car accident back in 2015. She admitted filing a false claim to pocket more than $3,600.
Before she was sentenced, Jennifer Zimmer told the judge "I know what I did was wrong, I saw an opportunity and I took it."
Zimmer says news surrounding her legal troubles have been hard on her family and is now home schooling her kids because of all the attention.
She's also working two jobs and told the judge, once she's done serving her jail time and repaying the $3,600 in restitution, she and her husband plan on moving out of state.
Zimmer will be on probation for three years. Her husband, George Zimmer is also facing nine counts of insurance fraud in the same case.
He's scheduled for a change of plea on May 17.
