Woman Reverses Type 2 Diabetes

Sioux Falls, SD

More and more people in the United States are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. In fact, today nearly 26-million children and adults have the disease.

But a Sioux Falls woman knows first-hand that it's possible for some people to reverse diabetes through diet and exercise.

For years, you'd never find Mary Ann Hofer at a gym. The 76-year-old Sioux Falls woman tried to start an exercise and diet plan several times, but failed.

"I needed to lose some weight. I needed to diet, but I was right back at it the next meal," Hofer said.

That changed when a doctor diagnosed Hofer with Type 2 diabetes in March.

"I was devastated," Hofer said.

But it also provided the motivation for Hofer to get to the gym. She started working out three times a week and found a fitness coach.

"When she comes in, she's here for usually an hour and a half," Welcyon Fitness Coach Paul Ahrendt said.

Hofer not only increases her heart rate through cardio training, but also focuses on balance and strength.

"With the strength training, we're increasing muscle mass, which increases sugar and fat burn," Ahrendt said.

In addition to working out three times a week, Hofer also watches what she eats.

"I watch carbs and I stay away from fried foods and white bread," Hofer said.

Thanks to diet and exercise, Hofer no longer needs to take medication for her diabetes and she has more energy.

Last March her blood sugar level was almost 370. Today it's down to just 90. Not to mention, she's also lost 35 pounds.

"When someone tells you, you have an illness, you do whatever you need to do," Hofer said.

Hofer says not only has she reversed her diabetes, but she definitely feels better. She now hopes to be a motivation to others.
