Running For A Reason

Sioux Falls, SD

With three kids under the age of four, and four kids total, Terry Vandrovec leads a very busy life.

"Things obviously get very hectic around here," Vandrovec said.

But Terry and his wife, Jess, are surrounded by reminders of just how lucky they are.

"We're pretty fortunate. It certainly could have turned out a lot differently than it did," Vandrovec said.

Their first set of twins was born premature at just 24 weeks. Each one could fit in the palm of your hand. Kailey had quite a struggle to survive. Her twin sister Breley died shortly after birth.

"Yesterday was the three years since Breley passed away," Vandrovec said.

The couple's second set of twins, Ty and Taylor, are now nine months old. Thankfully, they're now healthy babies, but the two had to spend several weeks in the NICU after being born at 33 weeks.

"It just made such a difference getting a few more weeks over what Kailey and Breley did," Vandrovec said.

Some of the life-saving equipment in the NICU is paid for by Children's Miracle Network.

Just when the family thought they might not need CMN's help anymore, Kailey became extremely sick in February from a respiratory virus.

Kailey spent a few days here at Sanford and then was flown to Minneapolis and placed on life support.

"They had to put a tube down her throat and help her breathe because she wasn't doing it on her own," Vandrovec said.

But once again their little fighter pulled through, and Kailey is now a healthy, proud older sister. Her family meanwhile is proud to once again run this weekend to raise money for Children's Miracle Network.

"To have the underlying cause of what you're helping out kids and family is such a great union," Vandrovec said.
