Importance Of A Routine Eye Exam

Sioux Falls, SD

A child's eyesight can change quickly so the experts say it's a good idea for kids to get their eyes checked regularly.

"I think an annual exam is important for children to make sure their eyes are doing okay, which will optimize their learning if they have good vision and seeing the board and things like that." Sanford Pediatrics Ophthalmologist, Dr. Geoffrey Tufty said.

"They put drops in my eyes and I have to read signs and stuff like that," Hannah Salameh said.

Hannah Salamah has had glasses for a couple of years now.

"I was in preschool and they said I needed reading glasses," Salameh said.

But she's not the only one in her family that wears a fancy pair of specs.

"My mom, my dad and one of my little brothers and then one of my older brothers," Salameh said.

This time of year, eye doctors are busy with school-aged patients.

"We do see a lot of kids come in with blurry vision this is the big time of the year where you get the push before school starts in the next couple of weeks it's usually a little slower in summer since kids aren't thinking about eye exams and school and now we are starting to see more of it," Dr. Tufty said.

Ophthalmologists recommend kids ages 3 or 4 should begin a routine eye exam.

"Depending on the age we try to give them a vision check if they can read the letter we try and get them to do that and read shapes or pictures and try to read each eye individually. If they are preverbal we try and have them fix and follow different targets that we can check their visions with," Dr. Tufty said.

The standard normal eyesight is 20/20. Patients with 20/30 or 20/40 might be prescribed glasses.

"Other than glasses and blurred vision we find developmental issues inside the eyes we see lazy eyes we occasionally find tumors in the eye so those are all the things we look for when we do a complete examination," Dr. Tufty said.
