High Blood Pressure Prevalent In Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls, SD

According to a recent survey, nearly two-thirds of tested Sioux Falls residents may be at risk for high blood pressure.

Live Well Sioux Falls and The Big Squeeze announced Wednesday the results of its April survey:

35% Normal blood pressure reading (less than 120/80).

45% At-risk category (121–139/81–89).

19% High reading (140–179/90–109).

1% Critically high reading (greater than 180/110).

Almost 9,000 residents were screened in April 2014, up from 2,500 in 2011. An additional 50,000 blood pressure reading from primary clinics were included in the survey.

The survey also compared the relationship between waist circumference and blood pressure. In this survey, a normal waist circumference for women is less than 35 inches; less than 40 inches for men. 34 percent of women had an above-normal waist, and of that group, 61 percent had elevated blood pressure. 32 percent of men surveyed had an above-normal waist, and of that group, 93 percent had elevated blood pressure.

A group of public and private partners from the Sioux Falls community lead The Big Squeeze effort each year: American Heart Association, Avera Health, City of Sioux Falls, DAKOTACARE, Lewis Drug, Novartis, Sanford Health, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, and Walgreens.
