Healthy Lunches On The Go

Sioux Falls, SD

Deanna Anema, recently became a mother of four. Her latest addition, a baby girl named Ireland, was born just a few days ago. Deanna says she's busier than ever.

"We are just running low on time and with four kids now it's really low on time," Deanna Anema said.

In a week, two of her kids will head back to school. Her kids are not fans of hot lunches, so a packed lunch is something they rarely leave home without.

"Peanut butter and jelly for the most part we are lucky we can actually bring peanut better to school and we do a lot of ham sandwiches and meat sandwiches and raw vegetables and fruits they like fruits too. And we always try and through in a snack or a little treat in there," Anema said.

One healthy snack option is string cheese.

"For their dairy, string cheese would be a great choice and it's very easy to pack in a lunch or a yogurt a Greek yogurt. They could certainly bring their milk or get milk from school," Avera-HyVee Registered Dietitian Janine Albers said.

Albers says it's best to plan ahead, so your morning routine is less hectic.

"It's less stress for the parent and the child if they plan those meals in the evening," Albers said.

Whether kids are going to eat a school lunch or parents are going to help them pack a cold lunch to go it's important that they eat enough fruits and vegetables that will give them enough energy as well as help with their overall school performance.

And no matter what you pack, have your kids help out.

"It's important to involve that child in the menu planning, shopping and actually preparing of those sack lunches because usually a child that is a part of that decision making is more apt to take ownership of that lunch and they will be less likely to trade out those items when they get to school," Albers said.

A familar routine the Anema family of six knows well.
