Get To Know Your Pharmacist

Sioux Falls, SD

Many people form a relationship with their regular doctor, but not as many form the same kind of relationship with their pharmacist. But having a good relationship with your pharmacist should be considered just as important.

"The importance of knowing your pharmacist well or having some sort of relationship there is important because medications now are complicated. There's a lot of them. There's brand names, there's generics," Dr. Scott Boyens said.

With the high volume of patients at clinics it's hard for doctors to keep track of each and every medication price.

"A lot of patients don't realize that a lot of what they take over-the-counter can affect what they take prescription wise and vice versa, and if we're not careful we could be doubling up on a lot of medications that could be very detrimental," Boyens said.

In addition to filling your prescriptions, your pharmacist can also end up saving you money.

Your pharmacist can recommend generic brands to help bring the cost down, while making sure a prescription is safe to combine with other medications you may be taking.

"We know your entire background as far as your medication list, what's going to be safe to use whether its over the counter pain relievers, allergy medications, things like that," Lewis Drug Pharmacist Kyle Heer said.

And if you want to check your blood pressure without setting up an appointment with your doctor, Heer says most pharmacies have a self-serve blood pressure machine that you can trust.

"People can come in, use it, get there blood pressure to kind of get an idea of what it's running and then bring those numbers over to us and we can actually go over those numbers with them," Heer said.

When it comes to your health care, these relationships are beneficial for not only you but your providers as well.

"People that, when they walk up they ask for you specifically. They know you, they trust you. It's a good feeling as the pharmacist side to know that what we're doing actually makes a difference for somebody," Heer said.

Doctors also remind you to keep a list of all the medications you're currently taking on hand, to be sure you're receiving the best care possible.
