Family Holds 3rd Annual Cancer Fundraiser

Madison, SD

After three years, the legacy of two sisters grows stronger as the Madison community gathers for the largest fundraising event thus far benefiting cancer treatments.

The fact that Barrels for Beth and Becky is even happening for the third straight year is only due to popular demand.

"Everyone wanted it. There are still cancer treatments to pay for. There are still people who need help," Katie Haak, Beth and Becky's niece, said.

The money raised goes directly to "All Women Count." The event is inspired by Beth Christensen who organized the first fundraiser in 2010 after receiving money while battling cancer. However, she lost the fight before seeing the event happen.

"We decided we were going to keep it going just for her," Haak said. "And then the same summer we lost my aunt Becky who was helping out with it and we decided to put her name on the title just for that."

Anne Aamot didn't know the sisters but says she is all too familiar with cancer, seeing two family members fight the deadly disease. She says she couldn't pass up the opportunity to help alongside her daughter Candice.

"You know, if I am going to pay an entry fee and do some of the silent auction items, I am spending money but I am giving it away to a good cause, too," Aamot said.

Last year, the organization raised more than $6,000 for All Women Count. They hope to do even better this year.

"It's awesome to see all the community that comes out to support it," Haak said. "They come out for Beth, they come out for Becky, but they also come out for All Women Count."

The fundraising event is growing this year with two donated tractors given to the highest bidder. Organizers say a fourth annual event is already in the works.
