Curbing Treats At School

Brandon, sd

You likely remember bringing treats to school on your birthday each year. But that could soon be a thing of the past at Brandon Valley schools.

Even if it's just playing at the park, Tammy Herding encourages her six children to be physically active every day.

"They swim and go to the park and ride bikes," Herding said.

Herding says parents need to play an active role in their children's health.

"I don't like them to sit on the couch all summer long," Herding said.

Now the Brandon Valley School District is also trying to encourage healthier habits.  One of the ways: Eliminating party treats and food rewards in the classroom.

"They can reward with different means. They can look at activities -- giving them extra recess or certain physical activity breaks," Brandon Valley Child Nutrition Director Gay Anderson said.

Brandon Valley's Child Nutrition Director Gay Anderson says the district is looking at the changes because of food allergies and to push students towards healthier habits.

"There's three hours between meals, and do we need to have all that. There's a lot of food that does get consumed in the classrooms," Anderson said.

The Federal government is also making changes; for example, schools, students and organizations will not be able to sell many snack foods at cafeterias or for club fundraisers at school.

"That starts at midnight every day until half an hour after the bell," Anderson said.

Herding isn't thrilled with the changes.

"It's fun for the kids to be able to celebrate their birthday and bring a treat they would like to bring and share with the class," Herding said.

Instead, she feels that parents should be the ones to take more responsibility for their children's health and what they're eating each day.
