Whether in shirt, pant, or sock form, cotton is not your best clothing choice for the gym, but that's only the first of five things you shouldn't wear while working out.
As a SDSU track and field athlete, Adam Halverson spends plenty of time at the gym. That's why he tries to be as comfortable as possible while working out.
"SDSU gave us a bunch of Under Armour stuff. You figure out that stuff feels a lot better once you are done than the cotton stuff," Halverson said.
That's because cotton absorbs sweat and doesn't dry very quickly. It can cause skin irritation and possibly even sores. You might want to try synthetic materials, like lycra and polyester instead.
"Those fabrics tend to dry easier. That's more comfortable for many people when they're working out," Associate Director for Sanford Sports Science Institute Thayne Munce, said.
You should also pay attention to the type of shoes you wear to the gym. Of course, you want to avoid sandals or high heels, but casual sneakers could also take a toll on your feet.
"If you are doing activity that requires you to be doing a lot of running and changing of direction, you have to have proper foot and ankle support. You also want to have the proper traction on that shoe, so if you are running, you are not slipping and sliding all over the place," Munce said.
While Halverson sometimes sports a necklace, Munce says you should avoid any type of jewelry while working out.
"It can get caught on machines or equipment particularly if you are weight lifting or performing exercises in a gym with other apparatus. You have to be careful of anything that is dangling or hanging off your body," Munce said.
While you might want your legs to look their best at the gym, you might want to skip the lotion, unless it's sunscreen.
"Some types of lotion for skincare products can irritate your skin, particularly in combination with sweat," Munce said.
Which Halverson says can make your workout routine more enjoyable this summer.
"You feel a lot more prepared for that next set when you are not drenched in sweat," Halverson said.
Something else you might want to avoid wearing to the gym, long, baggy sweatpants. They can catch on exercise machines or cause you to trip.
