Cross-Cultural Music

Sisseton, SD

The South Dakota Symphony made a stop in Sisseton over the weekend for a special concert premiere. The symphony's Lakota Music Project took the stage, featuring the premiere of a new composition specifically for Sisseton musician, Bryan Akipa.

Akipa makes all of his own traditional Native American instruments and created a flute specifically for the concert premiere. The Lakota Music Project is a collaborative effort between the South Dakota Symphony and leaders of the Native American community. The program's music addresses a history of racial tension and is designed to bridge a gap between the two cultures, and spur a culture conversation.
