Nearly 800 women gathered Wednesday in Sioux Falls to learn more about the newest Sioux Empire United Way initiative at the Women Unite Luncheon.
This year's initiative, "Ready to Start," works toward making sure every child has the skills he or she needs to start kindergarten. The five-week summer program runs just before the start of the school year. It helps children who haven't had access to preschool or a Head Start program learn 21-essential math and reading skills, as well as classroom behavior expectations.
Sioux Empire United Way hopes to provide the program for students in five area school districts. Just $500 covers the cost for one student.
