Rachel Schartz of Humboldt, SD finished third in The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program – “A Constitutional Speech Contest.” Schartz, who is a sophomore at West Central High School, earned a $14,000 college scholarship.
Schartz’s oration was titled Sewing Freedom. During her speech she called the Constitution “The greatest gift we have ever received.” She made the point that such a gift is accompanied with even greater responsibilities.
Schartz started the weekend in a field of 53 as the 76th annual contest kicked off, eventually advancing to the final three.
Each round of the competition consisted of an eight to ten minute speech and a randomly selected three to five minute oration on a constitutional topic. Each of those is given without the benefit of notes and in front of an audience, including judges.
