Sioux Falls, SD
Believe it or not, school is just around the corner in Sioux Falls. That means crews are working hard to finish up several construction projects before teachers and students start showing up in August.
It's going to be close. That's a phrase Sioux Falls School District Operations Director Jeff Kreiter is using.
There are several projects he's trying to guide to the finish line before teachers get back in school August 11.
"I don't know what happened to the summer. My summer was pretty short because of all the work we're doing but, no it's good," Kreiter said.
Several schools will have extra classrooms when kids arrive August 18. Others will have new homes for school administrators and new front doors.
At Hawthorne Elementary, crews are renovating the main office and adding security features to the main entrance.
"Security entrances and offices so, that's our first goal is to get that done by their completion date is August 1. Then we'll be working through the classrooms," Kreiter said.
Work at Axtell Park including a new parking lot, new stairway and additional restrooms is a big focus right now. The changes will help the school house the alternative learning programs moving into the building.
"I mean we had $2.5 million worth of renovation work there. That's going to go right up to that 8th deadline," Kreiter said.
Barring a hiccup, Kreiter says everything will be done in time with finishing touches coming later.
"We might do some punch lists. Punch lists are things that we've identified that weren't done quite right or painting needs touchup or something. We'll be doing that while teachers are setting up," Kreiter said.
The first day of school is August 18; that's 4 and a half weeks away.
