SD District Can't Fix Delinquent Lunch Accounts

Rapid City, SD

A school district in western South Dakota hasn't been able to find a solution for students who have fallen behind on their meal-money payments.

The Rapid City Area Schools district will continue to feed cheese sandwiches to students with delinquent accounts in 17 of its 23 schools.

A federal grant is allowing six schools in the district to give all students free breakfasts and lunches throughout the year. But officials at the 17 other schools were unable to come up with a comprehensive solution for the delinquent accounts.

Superintendent Tim Mitchell says the district doesn't have enough money to cover the accounts of the students whose parents haven't regularly paid for the meals.
